1. What We’re Doing Here

Inspired by Daily Apocalypse posts, I plan on analyzing passages from and elements of John Harper’s Blades in the Dark, First Edition, Version 8.2 text. That's what this collection is all about.

No, I'm not comparing Blades to AW. No, I don't think BitD is the only amazing RPG and game text in publication.

I do think the text is top-notch, and given how BitD is the starting place for so many games being designed today, I think it is worthwhile to take a close look at how the game works.

I'm just a literary geek and a new student to RPG theory, so it's likely I'll say some ridiculous things. That's cool. Jump in and let me know what you think.

In spite of the title of this collection, it is unlikely that this will actually be updated daily. We'll survive.

With my apologies to Jason D’Angelo, let’s tell the story in my own words.

In 2017, I found Apocalypse World 2nd Edition a little…arcane, to say the least. This was the era of G+, the old Google social network, which had a really strong RPG Theory community. Jason D’Angelo would do these little Bible Readings of Apocalypse World and they helped me so much.

Now I’m on my own journey Forging Into The Dark, and I could use a little excuse to analyse and understand Blades in the Dark in a new way. I think the Daily Apocalypse/Daily bible format is the right one.

The nature of the “daily bible reading format” is simple: A small section, some in depth reading, and then reflection. The sections are kept short to keep the reflection focused, and the daily nature means we don’t have to understand everything at once.

I think Blades is an excellent game, and I’m hoping this helps us to shine some spotlights onto parts of it that are otherwise overlooked.
